Your Adoption Connection: I'm currently going through my home study.
So, DH and I are scheduled for interviews at the adoption agency office. He is slightly disgruntled because the social worker is requiring us to go above the law in regards to the guns he has  I told him just to stay relaxed and patient and he would get through it. My question is will this be more of the same? Is the purpose to narrow down what is acceptable through fos-adopt? This is the last interview and then she will inspect the house. Any input is appreciated.

Your Adoption Connection: My husband and I just finished our homestudy.
Hi :) My husband and I just finished our home study and our social worker was definitely interested in the guns my husband owns. We had to buy a safe so they could be locked up (which we planned on doing anyway since we'll have children in the house), but other than that it really wasn't that big of a deal.

The concern over guns is common where I come from. We not only had to have a safe cabinet that locked; but also a separate container/cabinet where the ammunition would be locked up separately from the guns themselves. If we'd needed the guns quickly, we'd have been out of luck that way!

I don't like guns; never have. But I still marvel that my dad had guns all of my life---unlocked and completely available for any of us kids at any time. We were simply told 'No." and never had ANY desire to bother them at all. I get the things need to be locked up; but I also tire of parents and others who follow that with 'Just don't bother it!", KWIM?

Good luck! Has your agency indicated how long your wait might be?

Looking forward to reading more about you and your family.....

Sincerely,

Linny

I don't remember any timelines given but it seems like it been awhile since I talked to the agency about anything other than paperwork. We have one of those big gun safes but it is not enough for the agency. They want trigger locks on the guns in the safe and the ammo to be locked up in another area. So, just like Linny, if it needs to be used...forget it. I find it curious that its ok for the gun to just have a trigger lock and be in the closet but behind a heavy gun safe door, it still needs a lock. I find a lot of these fos-adopt regulations weird but I know some are just the agency. In any case, I think we will only be adopting once and if we really feel the urge again, I think the county might be easier from things I have learned during the process.
