Your Adoption Connection: In an at-risk placement with the sweetest baby boy
Hello, and thank you for allowing me to join this community. My wife and I have been in the adoption process for over 1 1/2 years. We are currently signed up with Adoption and Beyond and The Lighthouse. In April of this year, we had a failed placement at the last minute and have learned the hard way how painful that can be. We are open to adopting a child of white or mixed descent, but are taking things on a case-by-case basis due to the area where we live. According to our agencies, our openess to considering other issues (drugs, alcohol, etc...) is not all that common with some of their families and they say it definitely increases our odds. We are not well off by any means, but through the help of our family, we will be able to handle most anything that is thrown our way as far as cost.

One other thing that may be interesting to all of you, I have become active in advocating for adoption reform in my state. Through several contacts in state office, we are proposing legislation that will reduce the waiting period to sign voluntary relenquishment, reduce the waiting period for finalization and the number of post placement visits, allow relenquishment papers to be witnessed by the BM's attorney and another witness, require post-placement counseling for the BM at the expense of the Potenial adoptive family, and possibly prohibit judges from requiring the appearance of the BM at the initial placement court hearing. I am looking forward to getting many of your opinions and am interested to hear what the requirements are in the states you live in. We will have to argue this on the floor of the House of Representatives and any leads you can give me to assist in our research will be greatly appreciated. (By the way, I'm not a lawyer, I run a Hardware Store.) :wink

Thanks, Matt
