Your Adoption Connection: Training complete, homestudy in progress.
:hi

My name is Michelle (36) and my DH (Jason, 37) and I are pursuing adoption from the foster care system in Canada. We do not have children at this time and we would love to add one or a sibling group of two kids in the 1-12 age-range to our family. We have completed the training and are part way through the homestudy at this time. We are very lucky in that our road to adoption has (so far) been shorter than most people report. We made the decision in May and submitted our paperwork at the end of June. However, we aren't strangers to "waiting" as we tried unsuccessfully to conceive for seven years (with a two-year break). It is nice to connect with other people who are waiting, and once we add a child/children to our family, it will be great to have other people who have adopted older children to talk to. Other than that, we live in a small town in Northern British Columbia. We have two cats and two dogs and we own a toy store.

Thank you for having me here. :wave

Your Adoption Connection: We adopted four little wonders
Hi MIchelle! I am Marcy, and we have adopted four times. Twice through foster care (two newborns...well, our son was 2 by the time he was "ours" but came as a 16 hour old baby). I am from Central Alberta so hello from another Canadian :-)

Hi Michelle,
Welcome to FP! I'm sure Marcia will be able to help you in a lot of areas with foster-adopt in Canada! The rest of us will be glad to listen and help in any way we can too! (And having your own toy-shop? Way cool!!!! :nod)

Looking forward to reading more about you!

Sincerely,

Linny

Hi Marcy! Nice to meet a fellow Canadian. A friend of mine is an AW in Alberta and she's just been so helpful and a great source of support. Congrats on your four (!!!) adoptions :) I would love to have lots of kids, but at this point I'd be so thrilled with just one if that is all we are blessed with.

Hi Linny! Thanks for the welcome. Yes, owning a toy store is a ton of fun. We asked our AW to please make sure that any kids (old enough to be involved in the decision) don't know that we have a toy store until after they have expressed that they would like to make a family with us. As a kid, the lure of a toy store might eclipse real concerns or reservations a child might have.

We will adopt from the foster care system, but not through foster-to-adopt. I don't think my heart could stand it if a foster-to-adopt son or daughter wasn't permanently placed with us so we will stick with kids who are already in the care of the ministry. We have a wide age range (which I know can be inadvisable) but we really are open as far as that is concerned. Boy or girl doesn't matter to us. One or two doesn't matter either. Every child and every situation is different but we feel that we have the skills, the support and the desire to parent many different types of children. We only have one spare room at the moment (although a massive yard to play in) so a sibling group would need to be either both boys or both girls. When the market upswings again we'll look at moving to a larger house, as long as kidlets seem okay with the idea.

Nice to meet everyone!
~ Michelle

I have adopted 3 older kids from the state system in NY, but they were straight adoptions - I wasn't a foster parent either. :)
