Your Adoption Connection: Starting the process .
Hi everyone...
We have met with an attorney to find out the basics. Now we are at a crossroads as to whether we start with an agency that only does NYS adoptions or wait 6 months to work with an agency that has a few out of state which they are authorities.
Also, has anyone had experience with an adoption consultant?
Any input would be great!

I remember that NY has some different adoption laws.......and not having adopted through NY, I can't state too much; but, I suspect some of the other members (at least on the East coast) will be able to help out. (Debbie???)

I personally would stay away from adoption consultants. IMO, like facilitators, they can charge big monies for info you could have received for free from others who've adopted or are in the same spot in the adoption journey. Best, IMO, to go with an agency or adoption attorney.

Please keep us informed about your adoption journey...and like I said, I'm hoping a few of the other members will come along to give more specific advice.

Hi and welcome!

New York is a tough state for agency adoptions, although it can be done (friends of mine just brought home a baby a few weeks ago to NY and they worked with one of the handful of licensed NY adoption agencies). You can work with one that only does in-state or one of the few that can do out-of-state. You can also have an independent homestudy and then work with an attorney (and it sounds like you've already started looking into that).

Where in NY are you? What type of situation are you looking for (newborn only? older child? are you open to race, special needs, etc.)? The answers to those questions might help answer your questions about which direction to go.

If you are in the tri-state area, you are welcome to attend meetings of an adoption support group I am involved with...the meetings are free and open to the public. Here's a link for more info: http://www.adoptiveparents.org.

And if you tell me which agencies/attornies you are considering I can tell you if I know them and/or know people who have worked (successfully) with them.
